It has been overwhelming to see the amount of folks who have responded to helping Hurricane Harvey relief efforts over the last several days. You all have truly stepped up and stepped out to provide much needed supplies to our fellow Texans in Houston and surrounding areas. Yesterday, Ka-Ri, with the help of Taylor and Farris, generously made an extra trip to Sam’s Club to load up another 2,880 water bottles to take on his next trip to Houston. And we have plans to do another Sam’s trip next week to add additional supplies for distribution in the coming weeks. Interesting side story – the supply stack was, unfortunately, poorly packed by the warehouse staff at Sam’s Club. The packing came loose during the return trip and crashed onto the onramp of 75 south. Thankfully, the majority of the items were salvaged! Most important to this story though is that six total strangers pulled over to render aide. They picked up all of the downed water bottles, directed traffic to keep everyone safe, helped load the truck/flatbed back up, and assisted them in firmly securing the supplies. Taylor and Farris claim they were not much help (I doubt that) but they did manage to snap a few photos (attached) because not all heroes wear capes (or pickup water bottles on an onramp onto CENTRAL EXPRESSWAY) Ka-Ri, you’re the best!
While there has already been a tremendous outpour of help and a sense of urgency to donate from GFF’ers, and our community at large, it remains clear that we can do more. From today, Sept. 1, until Thursday, Sept. 7, GFF is committed to contributing a 2:1 match up to $5,000? $7,500? $10,000? for every dollar donated by GFF’s employees to the Greater Houston Community Foundation for Hurricane Harvey victims. GHCF, with the leadership of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and County Judge Ed Emmett, has established the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund that will accept tax deductible flood relief donations for victims that have been affected by the recent floods. The Fund will be housed at GHCF, a 501©(3) public charity. Additionally, we want to assure everyone that the track record and effectiveness (what percentage of donations go to the recipients of the organization that has been chosen) has been well vetted and specifically notable is that GHCF has a current Gold Star rating from GuideStar. We believe that any monies donated to GHCF will get to those with the greatest amount of need.
We are using a hosted website through Double the Donation: https://doublethedonation.com/gff (DTF/Rick, Taylor and I are working on getting this page linked and working the right way)
Again, thank you to everyone for all that you have done and continue to do.
