We need your help to:
- Create a full scale Bike Start is a learn to ride program for K-5th. Being able to ride a bike is a life skill that doesn’t just provide physical and mental health benefits, but also enables self-directed transportation. Ghisallo has discovered that a surprisingly high number of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders do not know how to ride a bike. With the new bikes you help us build, we’ll be able to support Ghisallo in expanding this programing to more children in underserved areas of Austin. At full scale, Bike Start would be the only high-volume learn-to-ride program of its kind in Austin.
- Expand to additional Cycle Academy Bike Club sites so even more youth can learn to use bikes to safely explore their community, navigate the city, and for transportation to the park, the pool, friend's house, and school. We serve 20 weekly sites, and have a waiting list!
- We launched the first Youth Bicycle Lending Library @ Langford Elementary this Oct with 40 bikes for students and 15 for parents. This was made possible in part by our 2018 Austin Gives Miles campaign! We want to expand this opportunity to more schools who will receive a fleet of bikes for students to check out like library books to get to and from school.
- Support and grow our Golden Rollers (older adult and senior tricycle program) program. We have expanded our programming to Montopolis Rec, bringing our total to 4 program sites with 6 programs.
With your support, we are able to create these opportunities! Learning to get around by bike safely and sanely doesn’t just build experiences, but also creates endless opportunities and immediately expands one’s horizons. We develop riders who have the skills to get to their park, pool, friend's house, and school by bicycle, and in doing so, students have visited Lady Bird Lake, City Hall, Auditorium Shores, and many other places for the first time in their lives.
From 2013 through 2018, we have served more than 18,000 youth participants via Bike Clubs and Earn-A-Bike programs and another 11,000+ through Bicycle Skills Challenge programs (advanced bike rodeos) at over 30 sites across Austin.
Golden Rollers, our senior tricycle program, is for adults who are 50 years old and older. Our oldest member is 95! With over 130 Golden Rollers in 5 programs at 3 sites, we enables seniors to engage in a safe, low-impact means of exercise and exploration. Getting out and about to see and be seen within the community, they have completed over 600 trips by trike since 2015.
All of these programs are equipment intensive. Each new youth program requires 10-15 bikes and helmets, pumps, tools, and supplies. Each new Golden Rollers program requires 5 or more trikes, assistive equipment (recumbent trikes, hand trikes, helmets, and in many cases, a on-site storage container).
Although these programs are provided by us, they are made possible by you!
