For many of us, the past year may go down as one of the most eventful and challenging in recent history. I will be candid with you; 2017 was not an easy year for me. I have personally witnessed the painful effects of hatred, bigotry, divisiveness and growing distrust between communities. However, I have also witnessed individuals and communities choosing to get involved and choosing to become allies, and step up to protect and care for one another. The past year has given me the opportunity to experience, at a very personal level, what love in action looks like. It looks like Allyship.
The events of the past year, both positive and negative, have confirmed and strengthened my resolve that Service Never Sleeps’ mission to equip allies for social justice is incredibly timely, needed, and more important than ever. 2017 was a foundational year for Service Never Sleeps, and has helped cement the reasons why our work is not only timely, but necessary to help create solutions for the challenges faced by our most vulnerable communities. We are harnessing the transformative power of community from those who gave faithfully with their talents and compassion.
Through your generous support in 2017, Service Never Sleeps made a significant difference in a number of ways:
• 16 non-profit organizations receiving much needed support from young professional fellows and volunteers from the private sector,
• Over $100,000 worth of value generated towards the capacity and abilities of non-profit organizations serving some of the most vulnerable communities in the DC metro area,
• Over 400 people got equipped through the Allyship Workshop on how to build on empathy to promote social justice and build bridges,
• 99% of Allyship Workshop participants reported feeling equipped to be allies and to commit to a lifestyle of Allyship – one that allows them to transform their love and passion into action.
And this is only the beginning…. We are igniting a national Allyship movement of love in action, with the goal of inclusion, opportunity and equality for all. We are leading the charge of bridge-building by equipping leaders to build on empathy to make a difference in their communities. We are creating a world of “shared humanity”—where everyone is embraced for who they are, and can thrive to reach their highest potential.
We want to provide the opportunity for you to put your love into action, and become a founding member of the Allyship movement… In order to bring to fruition our vision, we need a deeper commitment, ongoing engagement and the financial support of our friends and allies. We need to start 2018 strongly, by gathering the resources necessary to expand our ability to bring Allyship to a growing number of communities in the New Year.
Our incredible group of board members have generously offered to match every donation made during the Giving Tuesday Campaign (all donations received by December 15, 2017) dollar, up to $10,000. This means that your contributions will be doubled, increasing the impact of your giving.
As we continue to reflect on the past year, and plan for next year, we are deeply moved by the way that people have shown up for others, especially you. We are particularly thankful for you and for your support throughout our journey. In this Thanksgiving season, we want to say THANKS for your ongoing commitment, support and engagement.
