Milk is one of the most requested items from Gleaners, yet it is the least donated. For many food-insecure families, affording milk for their children is very difficult. You can help Gleaners distribute 500 gallons of nutrious milk to children in need across southeast Michigan.
It is a great source of high-quality protein and provides calcium, vitamin D, and potassium: key nutrients that are most likely to be missing in the diets of food insecure families. Calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth, especially for children as they grow. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 2-3 servings of dairy foods including milk for children four to eight years old and four servings for adolescents to help meet their calcium and vitamin D needs.
