American Cancer Society "Gertrude C. Ford Hope Lodge" in Jackson, Mississippi, will offer a solution to the lodging barrier faced by cancer patients who must undergo treatment far from home. Located in the heart of Jackson’s medical community, on a piece of property that has been offered through a partnership with the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the Hope Lodge provides housing free of charge on a first-come, first served basis to cancer patients and their caregivers during their course of treatment. This location is also easily accessible to other healthcare facilities and treatment centers within the immediate vicinity. We do not ask income qualifying questions because we feel that everyone deserves access to cancer care regardless of income. There are so many factors involved in the financial burden of cancer than what can be determined by looking at someone’s income statement or tax return. For example, even for someone who receives a moderate income, a cancer diagnosis that will require a six-week treatment regimen at a medical facility 65 miles from home, paying for lodging; transportation and meals is a formidable cost. The Hope Lodge not only reduces thisfinancial burden, but also provides a much-needed supportnetwork in a clean, safe and comfortable environment.
