I am running the NYC Marathon to raise enough money for a person who is blind like me to receive a guide dog trained to run. Last week, we broke new ground when my Guiding Eyes guide dog, Gus, guided me while running a five-mile race as part of my marathon training. Our Running Guides don't run marathons, however, Gus has been an inspirational part of my training and my ability to stay healthy overall.
Gus, a friendly yellow Lab, was trained as part of the Guiding Eyes Running Guides program, the only program of its kind worldwide that enables people who are blind or visually impaired to run with their guide dog. Having a Running Guide enhances my independence and overall physical fitness. I would like other people who are blind to have the same opportunity -- whether going for a casual jog in the park or training for a marathon.
Raising enough money to help someone get a Running Guide costs $50,000. This includes two years of training, veterinary care and lifetime support all the way to a happy retirement. Please make a donation, even if it is one dollar per mile, to help someone who is blind.
