Dear Friends and Family,I feel very fortunate to be the mother of two beautiful little people, Hayley and Finley. Both of our children needed care in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Units) in Calgary. Hayley was born 2 months earlier than expected and made her arrival on September 12, 2012, weighing a teeny 2lbs 9 oz. Without the expert medical care we received from both the Foothills and Rocky View Neonatal Intensive Care Units, we wouldn't have such a remarkable little girl in our lives. Then our Finley arrived a little early, only 8 days, but he had some difficulty breathing on his own at first, and then shortly after we were in the postpartum unit, he had difficulty regulating his blood sugar (which can cause brain damage) and had to be transferred to the NICU to get an IV and a sugar drip. He was in the Foothills NICU for 4 days and then the Peter Lougheed NICU for 1 night. Without the NICU, both our babies wouldn’t be here or be as happy and as healthy as they are.
Once again, this Mother's Day, all I want to do is spend time with my family and raise money for the Neonatal Intensive Care Units in Calgary by participating in the Sport Chek Mother's Day Run, Walk and Ride. I realize that we all get bombarded with people asking for money for various charities and I completely understand if you already have a charity that is closer to your heart that you support. But I also figured there is never any harm in asking. So if you are able to support this cause, please sponsor Hayley, Finley, Ian and I this Mother's Day in an event that provides valuable funds for the NICUs. We will always be so indebted to these facilities and we hope to participate annually in this event. It's a charity event that is near and dear to our hearts because without the NICU, Hayley wouldn't be here today, Finley might not be the happy and healthy little cutie he is and if we can help fund these units in any way and possibly help another newborn survive, then it's worth the effort to us.
CALGARY HEALTH TRUST | 1 in 8 babies born will need the care of the NICU. Help us give every infant a fighting chance to live the best life possible. Your support of the Sport Chek Mother’s Day Run, Walk and Ride helps to provide the equipment and resources to give them just that.
Some babies come into the world as early as 23 weeks and weigh as little as 500 grams. How can we help them live the healthiest lives possible? The care these babies receive in the first minutes, hours, days and sometimes even months in the NICU can mean life or death and have lifelong impact on their development and future health.
Proceeds from the 2018 Sport Chek Mother’s Day Run, Walk & Ride will go towards the redevelopment of the Foothills Hospital NICU. This new space will put leading-edge research into action, combine the very best in people, space and technology and ensure that every newborn has access to the specialized care and attention only world-class NICU’s can provide.
Thank you for your participation in the 42nd annual Sport Chek Mother’s Day Run, Walk & Ride and Calgary Health Trust. Together, we are transforming health care for our community today and well into the future. For more information, visit www.calgaryhealthtrust.ca.
