The British Virgin Islands have been leveled by Hurricane Irma, and thousands of people will need to rebuild their lives from the ruins. In a community that relies almost completely on tourism to put food on the table, the most vulnerable are those who do not work in the resorts or expensive hotels, but who run their own business. In 2015 and 2016, my family was lucky enough to meet some of these people: Ivan Chinnery and his wonderful family, who ran Ivan's Stress-Free Bar & White Bay Campground.
Ivan and his folks ran a small beachside campground that was available to everyone, including those who could not afford fancy resorts. Their warmth, cheer, and absolute dedication to their work made their campground feel more like home than like a vacation spot. And now, after putting years and years of themselves into this business, raising their children there, and preserving the culture of the BVI, Ivan and his family have had their livelihood destroyed by Hurricane Irma. There is no telling how much time it will take for them to rebuild, or if they will even be able to.
We are asking for donations that will go directly towards supporting Ivan's family. It is the least we can do for them, and in a time when the enormity of human tragedies can be overwhelming, the only forward is to help each other one person or family at a time. Ivan and his family were at the mercy of this hurricane, and now we are asking you to show them the love and giving spirit that they so generously showed us, and many others, for years.
