7 Years ago I visited Peru for the first time and had the privilege of working with an amazing organization that is dedicated to save trafficked jungle species. Magali Salinas, the founder, has dedicated her life to saving, rehabilitating and taking in local rescued wildlife.
Magali single handedly takes on the role of director, treasurer, volunteer coordinator, social media and outreach expert in her NP organization, Amazon Shelter (http://amazonshelter.org/) and is continuously struggling to keep the animals fed and handful of staff paid, with no help from the Peruvian government, outside organizations and small amount of donations.
Amazon Shelter relies heavily on paying volunteers who pay to stay and help at the center, but there is never a constant flow.
For 7 years this place has been on my mind, and the minds of all who have visited I am sure, because this place and this woman really find a way to reach your heart.
At the center, at any time you will find red howler monkeys, white lipped and collared peccaries, macaws, parrots, tortoises, brown capuchin monkeys, red brocket deer and more. These animals, if possible, are rehabilitated and then responsibility released back into the wild, others may call this place home for the entirety of there lives due to injuries and being ex pets.
There is always a constant need for finding here, but now, it is critical for Amazon Shelter to raise $1700 to build two new enclosures. At the moment, the old enclosure for the peccary and the brocket deer is made of mesh and wooden stakes. The peccary has been breaking though and the deer have as well.
The goal is to raise $1700 to completely revamp the enclosures.
$850 is for the metal fencing.
$800 for the metal tubes for the corners.
$500 for the manual labor that will have to be hired to install it.
This will be a long lasting, permanent, non rusting or breakable solution that will serve the rescue for years to come.
