Within the rehabilitation center "White Stork" we are building a winter house for white storks in trouble.
I'm Kristina Baranova, Candidate of Biological Sciences, ornithologist, researcher of the Wildlife Sanctuary Remdovsky and leading researcher of the Smolenskoyrie Poozerie National Park. Together with Elena Andreeva, administrator of the "White Stork" group in Russia, we present to you a project aimed at helping white storks, who for various reasons can not migrate for the winter.
Every year, a large number of white storks need human help, whether due to illegal shooting, electric shock, traffic accidents, storms or other causes. We have a good track record of rehabilitation and further release of the white stork: more than 50 birds received help, 13 were released, 29 - in zoos or rehabilitation centers.
We see our winter home as an interregional project - white storks need help in the Leningrad, Pskov, Smolensk, Novgorod and Bryansk regions. The center will be located in the Remdovsky Wildlife Sanctuary, on the shore of the largest lake in Europe. In spring the birds will be released in the sanctuary or in the National Park of Smolensk Puzersky.
We plan to work in the following areas:
Raising abortions, rescued by people, and their further release
Working with house storks: those who depend on the person will remain in the center, those who can live in the wild, will be ready to return to the wild.
Strengthening of birds that did not migrate for the winter and released them next spring
Strengthen the wounded birds and search for a permanent home for them.
The allocation of birds will take place in specially protected areas, where hunting is prohibited.
The financial goal of our project on is to collect 6000 $. If we manage to collect a large amount, the money will be spent on the summer cage for storks. If the project is successfully completed, we will provide a full photo-report. The project is not for profit, we strive to help the birds and people who once rescued birds.
