Wade was pulled from the Shafter Shelter. He was brought in as a stray by a concerned citizen and had been found wandering the border of Shafter and Wasco. Originally the shelter thought he had a broken leg because he walked with a pronounced limp and took him to a Wasco vet for diagnosis. The vet X-rayed the leg and found no break but the bone in that leg was disintegrated. They ran no valley fever test but diagnosed him with valley fever and prescribed meds. He was then returned to the Shafter shelter.
Once he was in our care, his Valley Fever test revealed that he does indeed have Valley Fever. Unfortunately his levels are incredibly high. Our vet said they are the highest she’s seen in her 25 year career 😞. Those high levels caused the Valley Fever to disseminate into his leg, eye and face. He still has a chance at recovery but will likely be on medications long term and possibly for life.
