Once finished, 1609 8th Street in Des Moines, Iowa will be utilized as a rental unit as well as a place for community gathering and learning.
The home is in a area that is primarily low income and in need of assistance. There is a lack of fresh produce and easily accessible grocery stores. This home will assist the neighborhood in gaining knowledge and to create a more sustainable living area.
This Model Home Project will not only enhance the neighborhood, this project will be a solid, safe and sound structure. It will also serve as a warm environment to live in and invite the public to see. We also want to show the neighborhood that someone does care about their lively hood as well as their environment and that they too can have and practice sustainable and efficient building methods at a price they can afford.
During construction we will have community volunteer days geared around the smaller projects such as demo work, installing drywall, interior painting, setting window and laying flooring. On these days we plan to have workshops geared around installations to removal. These days will help give knowledge of these procedures to volunteers and D.I.Y. participants so that they can work on projects at home.
