I started volunteering with Horizons for Homeless Children back in 2012 in order to help serve the community I grew up in. Play was such an important part of my own childhood and I wanted to help provide it to kids who didn't have the access/resources to.
When families are placed in shelters, they are only allowed to bring 1-2 trash bags of items with them and often times toys don't make the cut. For 30 years Horizons has been building beautiful playspaces and stocking them with toys for all different ages and stages. Over my years of volunteering, I was able to witness the magic of the playspace. It's a safe space for kids. They line up each week eager to engage with playful adults, and mom/dad get a chance to relax/catch up/take classes.
I was a volunteer, then an intern, then a full time employee of Horizons adding up to 7 years of commitment to this organizinatn. I believe in it and I have seen firsthand the neccessity of their work. Upon leaving my full time position with Horizons, I didn't want my work to end so I have commited to running 26.2 and raising 9,000 for the children & families who need it most.
I hope you will consider helping me reach my goal. Together, we can ensure that every child has the access to education through Horizons Early Education programs and to play through the Playspace program.
Over the past 18 years, the Horizons Boston Marathon team has raised over $1.7 million in support of the more than 2,000 young homeless children we serve each week throughout Massachusetts. This team of passionate and committed supporters run the Boston Marathon to fundraise and spread the word about the crisis of child and family homelessness. Thank you in advance for helping the children and families we serve!
