Story

Elephants are one of the world’s most intelligent creatures and manifest a wide variety of behaviors, including self-awareness, compassion, grief, and even altruism—there have been countless records of elephants helping other animals (including humans) in distress.

Elephants are wildlife — not entertainers.

Over 75% of elephants (2,193 out of the 2,923 surveyed elephants) are living in poor, unacceptable conditions at venues offering elephant rides, one of the most popular tourist activities in Asian countries. These elephants are forced through a process known as “Elephant Crushing”, an extreme form of restraint using chains and small, disproportionately sized cages. Despite being extremely social creatures, they have limited social interaction and are forced to perform stressful show activities while receiving remarkably inadequate nutrition.

Elephant Nature Park has become a home for distressed elephants from all over Thailand. In the 1990's, ENP Founder Lek Chailert set out on a mission to provide a sanctuary for forgotten animals. Today, the park provides a much needed refuge for elephants, dogs, cats, birds, and my other rescued animals.

With a love and respect for her country’s national symbol, and the knowledge that they were becoming endangered, Lek began advocating for the rights and welfare of the Asian elephants in Thailand. In an industry steeped in tradition, advocating for positive change in the ways domestic and wild Asian elephants are treated has not been an easy battle. However, with hard work and determination her voice is now internationally recognized. In addition to several documentaries produced by National Geographic, Discovery, Animal Planet and the BBC, Lek has also won many honorary awards.

Katz Coffee is hosting a special screening of the independent documentary Love & Bananas: An Elephant Story at the River Oaks Theatre. We invite you to join us for an evening of hope, inspiration, and support.

This event is in partnership with ENP Coffee Co., Serengeti Foundation, and Elephant Nature Park. All proceeds will be donated to support the mission of Elephant Nature Park to rescue and rehabilitate Asian elephants and give them a forever sanctuary.

Our community goal is to raise enough money to set a captive Elephant free onto  the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Please help us meet this goal.
