A little bit about us: Hunkapi Programs is a equine and garden therapy program in sunny Scottsdale, AZ that helps individuals promote personal growth.
Here's our crowdfunding goal! Help us reach $6,000 to make it possible!
Hunkapi is always seeking new and better ways to raise awareness about our program and the work we do, while simultaneously finding ways to increase and expand our donor base and improve our fund raising position. In other words, we’re trying to “raise friends” while making money!
Hunkapi expects to use the proceeds from CrowdRise to fund the creation of a wheelchair accessible garden and pavilion area. We envision the space to become a place where all clients and community members can grow mindfully and create long lasting memories in nature for years to come.
We are committed to our community and strongly believe that every place on our farm should serve a purpose greater than itself. The new garden space, outfitted with raised beds and paved walkways, will allow Hunkapi to expand our horticultural services, for both clients and their families. Additionally, the produce grown in the garden will be donated to serve local food banks.
When the space is not being utilized for Hunkapi’s therapy services, it will be available to be rented for small gatherings. The revenue raised from this new venue will go directly to funding specific programs, like the ALS group, and our “friendraising” capabilities will be maximized. That’s good that pays for itself!
Once we reach our $6,000 goal, we hope to be granted a larger grant to fund the following program! Let's make this dream a reality...
With grant funds provided from A Community Thrives, Hunkapi intends to directly provide services on behalf of recently diagnosed ALS patients, overlaying a research component to measure improved quality of life through Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. For more than two decades, Hunkapi has provided horse-powered learning and life skills programs, therapeutic riding, and equine assisted psychotherapy programs (incorporating horses for emotional growth and learning). Today we serve nearly 300 individuals each week and our clients span the range from preschool age children with special needs to adults (including veterans with PTSD). This proposal was conceived through collaboration between Mayo Clinic, the ALS Association and Hunkapi. The ALS Association approached Hunkapi, seeking to secure our services on behalf of their patients. Mayo Clinic’s ALS team has a longstanding interest in alternative therapies for treating ALS and has discussed with Hunkapi a treatment trial of equine therapy. Together, we agreed to develop a program that will allow 24 Mayo ALS patients access to weekly 60-90 minute sessions at Hunkapi. There will be a total of two groups, with 12 patients in each group, each receiving eight (8) weeks of equine therapy. Mayo Clinic will overlay pre and post quality of life assessments, to be administered by their ALS clinic director (a medical doctor) and their in-house statisticians to compile and analyze results. There is no cost to this grant for Mayo's involvement! Mayo patients will be referred based upon the clinic director's assessment that each individual has the potential to benefit from Hunkapi's programs and also based upon the knowledge that each patient's family can provide weekly transportation. While not a funded objective of this proposal, we will also provide caregiver respite during each session, to include mindful meditation, yoga, etc.
Thank you for your support!
Much love from the Hunkapi Team
