Huntington’s disease is a devastating genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It diminishes an individual’s ability to walk, think, talk, and reason until they are entirely dependent on others for their care. HD is known as the quintessential family disease because every child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the faulty gene. Today, there are 30,000 symptomatic Americans and more than 200,000 at-risk of inheriting the disease. HD is fatal, and there is no cure. The Orange County Chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America is the only local organization with resources available for HD Families. In addition to providing a 2-hour support group monthly, the OC Chapter also provides resources to families such as scheduling genetic testing appointments, providing information about long-term care facilities and monthly support groups near them, schedule counseling and therapy sessions, distribute information about Huntington’s Disease to doctors and physicians, providing respite care for HD caregivers, provide research updates and any other information HD patients and family's might inquire about. The Chapter’s monthly support group is available to people with HD, their families, caregivers and people at-risk in Orange County. An estimated 300 Orange County individuals have HD, and another 2,100 more are at risk of inheriting the disease. Finally, the family impact is much greater with 7,700 Orange County families being impacted by the devastating effects of HD.
The funds raised through this important campaign will provide vital support to improve the lives of those affected by Huntington’s Disease. As a resident in our community and someone who has been personally affected by this devastating disease, I am asking you to help fight this battle with me. Our community should join together to raise awareness and encourage those affected by HD to remain hopeful for the future. Your donation can help catapult our research, care and educational programs for local families who face the challenges of Huntington’s Disease every day.
Donations by people like you go a great distance towards our vision of a world free of HD. As a non-profit volunteer organization we rely on fund raising activities and the generosity of others to make progress towards seeing this dream come true.
