I-LEAD Charter School (ILCS) was founded in 2011 to provide at risk youth and those who had already dropped out of school with the opportunity to re-engage in their education. Greater than 90% of ILCS learners are Hispanic, greater than 95% are at or below the poverty level, approximately 25% are special education learners and over 30% are English Language Learners. ILCS is located within the Reading School District area, in Reading, Berks County, PA, a district that historically had drop-out rates in excess of 40%. With all of these challenges, it was clear that at-risk students needed a choice in order to have a chance. The vast majority of ILCS learners enter ILCS years behind grade level in most subjects, making our work that of an academic trauma center pursuing a mission to re-engage young people who are disconnected from education so that they can become successful adults.
This Thanksgiving, I-LEAD Charter School’s (ILCS) learners, families, learning facilitators, staff, administration, and board of trustees have a lot to be thankful for. According to the recently published School Performance Profile scores computed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for the school year ending June 30, 2017, ILCS learners showed growth that was the greatest of any school in all of Berks County and in the top 1% of all schools in Pennsylvania.
It takes the hard work of dedicated people to achieve such promising results. While hard work is certainly a key to our learners’ success, providing the resources they need is no less important. Because ILCS is often paid the lowest charter school rate in the state for general education, providing the resources needed to help our learners follow a path of success, not the road of a dropout, is a tremendous challenge.
In this season of giving thanks for the blessings in our lives, we ask that you consider supporting our learners by making a monetary donation. Your contribution is tax deductible and will go a long way to helping our learners change the trajectory of their lives and the lives of generations to come. While on the surface we are a school providing education, what we are really doing through this work is changing lives for the better. With your donation, you can change lives too. We hope you will join in our mission by donating this holiday season.
