Dear Friends and Family,
As most of you know, a year ago I was recovering from my second surgery to rid my body of stage 2 breast cancer and its aftermath. It’s never really over as far as I can tell; it’s part of who I am now. I am both stronger in spirit and more vulnerable as a result. That is, I want to move forward at all times as I always have, but now I am far more in awe of the journey: the toothy grin from a stranger, the quiet majesty of the unassuming neighborhood trees, the pleased dog on a skateboard, the deep, long talks with friends, the lazy, laughing days with family. Little moments of awe can be missed if we don't slow it down just a bit. I can truly see that now.
Another great thing to come out of the whole experience was learning about the many fantastic organizations out there full of generous, caring people helping people like me navigate the scary road ahead. Imerman Angels is one of those organizations. Imerman’s objective is simple: provide one-on-one support to those fighting and surviving cancer as well as to their caregivers. Imerman mentors who knew what I was going through helped me sort through decisions and made me feel connected in a way I desperately needed.
When I saw an invite to join the Imerman NYC Marathon team this Novemer 4th, I thought how it sounded borderline insane. And then I thought, maybe I’ll just call to get more information…. Flash forward to 9 weeks into training, some gnarly blisters and hobbling recovery days: I am doing this!
I won’t be setting any speed records, but I will proudly run and walk with my team in gratitude for all the support Imerman provides and for the strength and good health I have now. And most especially, I run for those who can’t get on with their lives just now due to their struggles with this horrible disease; I hope my story serves as some inspiration on hard days.
I’m not a fan of asking for donations, but it’s easier knowing how much help, support and comfort Imerman is providing to women and men on their cancer journeys. If you are able to help me achieve my $3,000 fundraising goal, I am very grateful. Imerman covered my NYC Marathon entry fee so I will go first.
In this, my 50th year on the planet, I look forward to crossing the finish line knowing I carry the love and support of so many wonderful people in my heart. Thank you!
