In November, our Indigo Yoga Community will be embarking on a Yoga + Service experience in and around Antigua, Guatemala. 11 of us will be traveling to Antigua, where we will practice yoga every morning, reflect on our role as global citizens, and spend the afternoons experiencing and connecting with the Antigua community, and surrounding rural villages.
Community comes in all forms. We build community when we step into a yoga class and connect with our fellow yogis. We live, work and play in a local community. And we are a part of global community. This retreat is about celebrating all forms of community. We will have the opportunity to visit and interact with community members of rural villages around Antigua, and it's important to us that we leave a piece of our community behind. We have the opportunity to bring resources to these communities that have the power to make a profound difference.
Rural villages in the Esquintla Province of Guatemala suffer from lack of access to basic education, healthcare, and nutritious food. Many of the families in this region are migrant coffee farming families that struggle to make ends meet on a daily basis and often require their children to work, bypassing an education.
We will be working directly with a local program, Vamos Adelante that runs programs in 24 rural communities throughout Guatemala, that give families the opportunity to educate their children, provide them with proper medical care, install clean water, concrete floors and wood-saving stoves in their homes, and learn valuable income-generating skills.
As a group, we felt particularly passionate about two community needs that we want to raise money for - the first is supporting Vamos Adelante's food distribution program for elderly and malnourished children in the village and the second is raising money to install cement floors in the homes of 18 local families. Here's a bit more about each of those projects:
Food Distribution Program - $1,000 Goal
$1,000 will support one month of Vamos Adelante's food distribution program for the elderly and malnourished children within the village. With this contribution, 160 people will be provided with a supply of food, which includes enough supplies to provide at least one decent meal a day for a month - including beans, rice, pasta, cooking oil, sugar, milk, cereal, cookies, soap and more.
Cement Floor Installation for 18 Families - $3,200 Goal
$3,200 will provide the tools, labor and support necessary to install cement floors in the homes of 18 families. Cement floors, which will be replacing dirt floors, are critical for improving living standards for these families. The cement floors promote better health and hygiene and are important for the health of young children. The floor installation is a community effort - with the installation work being done by families and community members who have already received floors or will receive them soon.
We will have the opportunity during our trip to experience both of these projects in action - and while it's not possible for all of our friends and family to join us on this trip - we would love for a piece of you to travel with us. Any size donation makes a difference - $5 or $500, your money will be put to direct work in rural villages around Antigua and will increase the impact we are able to have with this yoga + service experience.
Thank you for your support, and we look forward to sharing pictures and our experiences with each of you.
