Hi, welcome to my fundraiser. I began as a teacher at Inwood Academy six years ago and currently serve 400 students as their high school principal. This is my second NYC Half marathon fundraiser for Inwood Academy but this year is particularly special for me. I am raising funds for our first class of graduates! Our inaugural cohort (students who entered 5th grade with Inwood Academy in 2010) graduates in June 2018.
Your donation will go toward our new Senior Scholarship Book Fund (SSBF). Students who graduate in June may receive $200 at the end of each college semester. To be eligible, students will be required to submit their course transcript and proof of registration for the next semester, and demonstrate a financial need.
My personal goal is to raise $1,500. This will support five of my very deserving students with funding toward their first year textbooks or e-library subscription expenses.
Not all my students will receive full-ride scholarships like senior Sokeyra. She was selected as our first QuestBridge National College Match recipient and was accepted to the highly selective Swarthmore College via early decision. The QuestBridge scholarship will pay 100% of her expenses including tuition, room and board, books and supplies, and travel. Sokeyra, who will be the first in her family to graduate from college, was selected for her academic excellence in the face of economic challenges.
Since most of my students (96%) are economically disadvantaged we know that applying for financial aid is critical to their college success, so we’re helping them with the financial aid applications. With your help, we can also give them that extra financial help they’ll need—through our SSBF.
I am asking you to partner with me in this endeavor to support the Class of 2018, Inwood Academy’s first graduating class. Won’t you support our students with a gift to our SSBF?
I am acutely aware of the distressing statistics surrounding college completion for underprivileged students, like those I serve. That is why Inwood Academy is supporting our graduates with more than just the SSBF. We are building out a program that will engage with our students not only through college matriculation but beyond, in a pay-it-forward program.
More About Inwood Academy
We are helping to change the life outcomes for children in Inwood and Washington Heights through education.
The school was founded in 2010 by a group of community advocates and educators who saw the need within the Inwood and Washington Heights communities of northern Manhattan for a quality public school choice. This is a school population primarily of first- and second-generation Latino families and most of the students will be the first in their families to graduate college.
Inwood Academy is a trailblazer in the New York charter school environment. What makes us unique is that we welcome every student who applies and is accepted via our admissions lottery. We meet students where they are, whether they speak little to no English or if they are four years behind their peers when they enroll with us in the fifth grade.
We really do meet students at their level – high or low. Our goal at Inwood Academy is to ensure that all our students’ graduate high school prepared to attend college and are young individuals of good character. We focus on the development of social, emotional, and cognitive skills that will help the children see themselves as burgeoning students. It is a school where any child, regardless of needs or academic standing, is challenged to think critically and given the support to experience success.
We are on a mission to see our students become the first in their families to graduate college. Join us!
Thank you so much!
