I got talked into doing an Ironman while I was still in a daze from completing my last Ironman 70.3 in May 2017. This spring — on May 12, 2018 — I will swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles in Ironman Santa Rosa. Yes, this is crazy. Why would I do this? To help the promising and talented young people at Alternatives in Action, where I sit on the Board of Directors.
operates youth development programs and a charter school in Oakland, CA. I'm thrilled to serve the students, staff, and families of this school community, as it's incredibly reminiscent of The Next Step Public Charter School in Washington, DC, where I began my career in education with marginalized students who had been failed by the DC Public Schools.
