Why Am I Fundraising For Imerman Angels?
This year, I am choosing to fundraise for Imerman Angels to thank them for the friendships they have given me, the kindness they have taught me, and to support the charity that is impacting Chicago, and the rest of the world.
Who Is Imerman Angels?
Imerman Angels is a FREE one-on-one cancer support charity. The goal is to match cancer survivors with newly diagnosed cancer fighters so that no one has to go through cancer alone.
Through a unique matching process, Imerman Angels partners anyone, any age, any gender, anywhere and any cancer type seeking support with someone just like them – a “Mentor Angel”. A Mentor Angel is a cancer survivor or caregiver who most importantly has faced the same type of cancer.
These one-on-one relationships give a cancer fighter or caregiver the chance to ask personal questions and get support from someone who has been there before.
Why Is This Charity So Special To Me?
After leaving Chicago for 8 years, I returned in 2015 to a whole new city. Everything in the city was new to me - new job, new condo, new life, and even a new city that was rebuilding after the crash of 2008. What was most challenging in this new life was trying to find my way into social settings and friendships that were meaningful. A close friend of mine (Thank you, Susan!) told me about a charity close to her heart called Imerman Angels. Having spent 8 years doing reconstructive surgery for cancer patients, this charity seemed relatable to both my profession, as well as to me as a person. I started volunteering with Imerman Angels, and eventually joined their professional board. I've even run several races with Team Imerman Angels to help gain awareness. What grew from all fo this were the meaningful and impactful friendships I was looking for in my new city and new life!
It's incredible to sit back and watch the impact that Imerman Angels is making in the lives of cancer fighters and survivors. It's incredible to watch as this small, newer charity grow into an even bigger charity known all across the world. It's even more incredible to know that me and my new group of close friends have gotten a chance to be a part of all of this.
This year, as October draws a bit closer, a team of more than 200+ Imerman Angels runners will head out to run 26.2 miles in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in order to fundraise and support the continued growth of Imerman Angels. While I may not be pounding the pavement, I will be right there supporting theses runners, and my friends, on the day of the event. I have pledged to help raise awareness and funds for the charity that so graciously helped me as I re-entered the great city of Chicago. Please join me in thanking Imerman Angels for all that they have done for me, but moreover, for all that they have done to connect cancer survivors and fighters NEVER face cancer alone!
