As I stood on the streets of Boston cheering on runners, I imagined myself one day running for a charity on those very same streets. As those thoughts ran through my head, someone with a Joe Andruzzi Foundation shirt ran by me and I envisioned myself running for them. I immediately went home and began my research and decided to make it happen sooner than later...and here I am today! I am beyond excited to announce that on Monday April 16th, I will be running the 2018 Boston Marathon for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation!
The Joe Andruzzi Foundation helps cancer patients in treatment and their families by assisting with rent or mortgage, utilities or other additional expenses during what can be the most stressful and challenging time of their lives. The foundation is dedicated to providing financial assistance to patients and families, helping them focus on recovery -- not bills.
You see cancer has always been in my family. The BRCA2 gene mutation my family carries puts myself, my sisters and my extended family members at high risk for developing breast, prostate, ovarian, and pancreatic cancer in a lifetime. My sisters and I have several screenings a year and many of my family members have fought , are currently fighting, or have sadly lost their battle and this is why this foundation is so important to me and every family fighting cancer every day.
I have lost three of my grandparents to it, two of my aunts, one uncle and one cousin have also passed from cancer. My two aunts lost their battle with breast cancer, my uncle lost his battle to prostate cancer and my cousin lost his to leukemia. I was never able to meet one of my aunts that has passed as she lost her life before I was born, her daughter (my cousin), is currently a breast cancer survivor. I have another aunt who is currently battling breast cancer along with her daughter (my cousin). A couple of years ago my own father was diagnosed with prostate cancer and forced to fight the same battle he watched his brother lose not too long ago. Watching my family fight many different battles with this terrible disease has been a mix of many emotions. I know that we alone can't cure cancer and we won't make it stop, but WE CAN do our best along the way to make it a little easier for those families fighting this cancer battle everyday.
I have always been a big runner and have run all sorts of races and although I currently have not run a marathon, I know I am up for the challenge. This has been something I have always wanted to do and if cancer has taught me anything it's that life is short and you never know when your time might be up, so do the things you dream to do NOW.
I know that raising money for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation will be one of my greatest accomplishments. Running and raising money for a foundation that supports the patients and family members of those fighting the toughest battle is something I will take great pride in. I for one know closely how many family members receiving benefits from the Joe Andruzzi Foundation feel everyday.
I pledge to put in the hard work and hours of training for this tough marathon course, but ask for your generous help along the way. Please make a donation to the Joe Andruzzi Foundation and help support cancer patients and families and follow me along on this amazing 26.2+ journey! Please remember no donation is too little.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
