Hello Family and Friends,
As many of you know, last year I hung up my sneakers after a decade of participating in the Juvenile Diabetes walk. I am still in a state of shock when I think about what we were able to raise for a cause so dear to my heart thanks to your incredible generosity – I am forever grateful!
Well, this spring I'm tying on my sneakers again for an incredible cause that has had tremendous impact on my family. I will be participating in the Clarke School for Hearing and Speech's Listening Walk. At Clarke, children, who are deaf and hard of hearing, learn to listen and talk. My granddaughter, Josephine, has been attending Clarke for the past two years as she has permanent hearing loss that requires her to wear hearing aids.
Josie currently attends Clarke five days a week where she receives speech therapy and specialized instruction from Clarke's phenomenal speech and language pathologists and teachers of the deaf. Josie's parents, Sean and Elizabeth, are constantly amazed how much progress she is making on a seemingly weekly basis. Her speech has gone from being understood by only those familiar with her to the point where Josie is tracking to join her fully hearing classmates in kindergarten.
Clarke is an amazing place! It is made up of an incredible staff of professionals who specialize in preparing children with hearing aids and cochlear implants to “mainstream” - join their peers with typical hearing – as soon as possible in the classroom by teaching students to maximize their use of residual hearing and to advocate for themselves in a classroom environment. Clarke relies heavily on grants and donations to expand its programs and to deliver services.
Each year Clarke hosts its Listening Walk at the Philadelphia Zoo to raise awareness for those children with hearing loss. I plan to participate in the walk on May 20th and request that you consider sponsoring me with a donation. I also would ask you to consider inquiring whether your employer might have a corporate match that would increase your impact.
In closing, I thank you for considering Clarke in your 2018 giving and wish you and your families health and happiness.
