I'm very excited to be participating in my first ever lifting event! Pull for Pride speaks to two things I care deeply about: uplifting marginalized LGBTQ youth and powerlifting. As a bisexual cisgender woman, powerlifting has been such a gift for making me feel at home in my body. I struggled a lot as a teen but didn't realize I was queer until college. I had the benefit of coming out after I was supporting myself and had found my chosen family, but so many queer youth don't get the sources they need. The Williams Institute estimates that 40% of the US's 1.6 million homeless youth are queer, and 43% of them were forced out of their homes by their parents. Our country's educational and social support services often fail these young people. The Ali Forney Center is a nonprofit organization that attempts to fill in the gaps that our institutions leave. I am thrilled to be lifting in support of all of their amazing work. I‘m training to hit 250 lbs on the platform, so please help me raise $4 per pound.
