Mission: Through a partnership between community and law enforcement, PALS's mission is to nurture young people to become responsible, productive, and law-abiding citizens by offering character-building, educational, sports, financial literacy, and life-enhancing programs to low and moderate-income families.
Vision: Our ultimate-goal is a community without crime, where children have equal access to opportunity, and where peace officers help drive the community's vitality.
History: Hollenbeck PAL was founded in 1992 through the efforts of Hollenbeck Division of the Los Angeles Police Department and community residents to implement sports activities to high-risk youths in response to the juvenile crime increase in the area. In 2003 PAL acquired its own 501(c)(3) non-profit status and is now governed by a board of directors comprised of community leaders, law enforcement personnel, and business professionals.
Juvenile Delinquency Prevention & Intervention
Get It Straight is a 12-week delinquency prevention and intervention training program for youth ages 10 to 17. Parents are required to attend each weekly session with their child. Participants are involved in a comprehensive curriculum combining classroom instruction, personal development, conflict resolution skills, and communication exercises. In addition, field trips to juvenile detention centers are routinely scheduled to give youth a first-hand look at the inevitable consequences of criminal activity. Additionally, parents are required to attend a separate 10-week parenting skills training called the Parent Project that will support their success.
Sports & Recreation
Sports 4 Kids provides at-risk boys and girls, ages 4 to 19, with a wide variety of physical activities, which serve as a positive alternative to the dangers of the streets. Youths participating in this program can become involved in traditional sports such as soccer, basketball, and indoor soccer, as well as fitness and nutrition classes that are offered to both youth and their parents.

Life-Skills & Leadership Development
Life. Camera. Action! (LCA) is a leadership and life-skills development program that uses digital video and the art of storytelling to teach LA youth (ages 12 to 17) to become successful productive citizens. Established in 2011, Life-Camera-Action operates in the Boyle Heights community of East Los Angles. Partnering with local middle and high schools, LCA is an innovative program that provides students, ages 12-17, opportunities to use technology and digital media to explore issues relative to them and their community. As they create media projects, students learn and enhance their life skills through critical-thinking and literacy skills; experience new methods of learning and doing research; improve their competence in a wide range of academic subjects; develop leadership skills; and improve their personal development and scholastic achievement.
Fitness & Nutrition Education
Fit 4 Kids is an ongoing nutrition education and fitness program that helps kids eat healthy and be physically active to prevent obesity and other related health conditions seen within our service community in Boyle Heights. Youths, ages 12 to 17, learn healthy-eating habits; engage in physical fitness; and gain knowledge to make life-long positive health choices.
