Last year at this time, I was looking for a walking group and was introduced to the Northridge Ridge Runners. I have been a member of Northridge Church, in Plymouth, for 15+ years but never considered joining because I was not a runner, but in recent years have made health and fitness a priority and wanted to become more physically active. Little did I know that by joining this group I would become a part of a movement, a walk/run team of freedom fighters called LoveRuns to eradicate human trafficking. It still boggles the mind to think that human trafficking is a problem in this community. I always thought of it as something that happens in remote villages of Europe or Africa.
LoveRuns, a non-profit organization, under the auspices of Northridge Church is determined to set free young victims of modern day slavery by raising awareness and funds to support local programs. This unthinkable criminal activity is a multi-billion dollar industry, in the United States. In high-rent areas like West Bloomfield, Macomb County, Western Wayne, and yes Detroit, children have been snatched from their families, and forced into prostitution and other illegal activity.
The fight to set the captured free was also personal. I am not a victim of human trafficking, but I am a prisoner of living within my comfort zone. Participation in a marathon was 13.1 miles outside of my comfort zone; however, it is amazing what one can accomplish when you stretch and dare to do something greater than oneself, and scares you to death. It's also an opportunity to put your faith to the test, and experience how God delivers in a miraculous way. Today, I've successfully completed my first half marathon, and have begun training for this year's FREEP marathon in October.
Participation with LoveRuns is an incredible love story. It's a story about 500 walkers, runners, walk/runner who have an incredible zest for life, a love for God and His people, regardless of their condition or circumstance. Our goal to eradicate human trafficking is such a worthwhile and noble cause, and I am very proud and humbled to be a part of this family of believers.
Will you join me? We want to ensure that any child that was been a victim of this unthinkable crime receives the care, counseling and other supports necessary to successfully move forward in life. My individual goal is to raise $1,400.00 funds to support LoveRuns.
1400. The number of minutes in every day a victim of human trafficking is enslaved and the number of minutes in a day that we are free. This is why your financial support MATTERS so much! Your tax-deductible donation will go directly to helping with rescue and restoration of human trafficking victims in Metro Detroit.
Every dollar counts. Every dollar matters.
