My family and I have signed up again to run for LoveRuns! After completing two full marathons (26.2 miles) the last two Octobers, I have been training with Erin and our fellow freedom fighters for the Detroit FREEP half (13.1), and all 3 of our kids - Joey, Connor, and Logan will be running the 5k!! Why is our family running again? Because Love Runs is determined to stop human trafficking and Michigan, our own backyard, currently ranks as one of the worst states in the nation. Law enforcement is making a difference - they've located and identified hundreds of victims. They know their names, but don't have enough qualified places to put them. The psychological, physical, and spiritual damage to victims can take years to overcome. Last year, Love Runs was able to raise over $330,000!!! Those funds were distributed locally to our partners - Vista Maria, AWOL, Salvation Army, SOAP, and Fort Street Open Door Ministry- to aid in the housing, restoration, and recovery of these victims. This year, my family has set a goal of $7,200 ($1,440 each). Why the odd amount? Well, 1,440 is the number of minutes in every day that a human trafficking victim is enslaved. It's also the same number of minutes we are free. $10 will provide food and a hygiene kit for a victim. $14 will house a victim for a night. $25 will give important educational skills, like reading. $100 will shelter a victim for a night; provide fifteen hygiene/safety/nutrition kits; one year of mentoring for reading; support life skills training, medical and psychological treatment.
