Story
  May 31 2019 . Hamilton, ON, Canada

The McMaster Rehabilitation Science Charity Ball is an annual dinner and dancing gala organized by the Masters of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Speech Language Pathology students at McMaster University. This year we are honoured to be celebrating our 25th Annual Ball on Friday May 31st 2019.

This large event is used as a platform to allow us to give back to a local charity that provides rehabilitation services within the community. In addition to our main dinner and dancing gala, featuring a silent auction and raffle, we host monthly fundraisers to maximize the amount of monetary assistance and awareness we are able to raise for the selected charity.

This year will be our first attempt at an online fundraising campaign as we hope to reach a larger community to be able to provide the most support possible for our selected charity, the Lansdowne Children's Centre Foundation.

The Lansdowne Children's Centre Foundation (Registration Number: 118816883) is a local Brantford charity which was established to respond to the increasing demands for specialized therapies for children with special needs. It is the mission of the foundation to support the Lansdowne Children's Centre by raising public awareness about their programs, in order to ensure the financial support and success of their services. Funds raised through the foundation directly benefit the children and youth who receive optimal care and support from the centre.

Lansdowne Children’s Centre is a treatment centre for children and youth with physical, developmental or communication needs. Specialized care and services are provided to more than 2,600 children, youth and their families annually, from birth until 19 years old. Their special needs may arise from Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Down Syndrome, Brain Injury, Muscular Dystrophy, Autism and other developmental delays.  The services offered at the centre, in home, in schools and other community settings provide essential supports and play an important role in enabling children and youth with special needs to develop to their full potential and enjoy opportunities to fully participate in everyday activities.

Within the foundation, we our specifically aiming to support the Every Kid Counts program. The Every Kid Counts program is an award winning program that allows children and youth with special needs to have an equal opportunity to participate in their local community recreation and leisure programs. The Every Kid Counts program provides a support worker to provide both hands on and programming support to the child/youth, family, and recreation staff to promote full participation in the provided recreation/leisure activity. It has made it possible for children and youth with special needs to have the freedom of choice and the joy of inclusion in community based programs.

Through our fundraising efforts, it is our goal to make a difference in the lives of children who utilize this program. This will be facilitated through the funds we raise by continuing to create opportunities for these children to allow for their optimal development and inclusion in society through participation in lesiure activities they enjoy. Any donation you are able to give would be greatly appreciated, and we thank you in advance for your generous contribution.
