The Magarini Children Centre and Organic Farming Demonstration Farm is a visionary non-profit organization in Kenya, Africa. We need your help in building infrastructure as we care for some 250 orphans and youth at risk from the surrounding deep rural area of the Marafa district.
The Centre provides three meals a day, a government approved formal education for as well as the life skills of how to organically grow their own food to these children. Through "creating a natural relationship between the soil and people', the Centre promotes an environment where the children are able to cultivate the arts and skills of self-love and care as well as those of resilient community and deep democracy practices.
The Centre is an emerging seed of hope and model for the nurturance of a more beautiful world—sprouting in the midst of great challenges and needs. Able to be self-sufficient until climate change became a felt reality with severe droughts in 2013, with a bit of support, the Centre is fully capable of regaining that food self-sufficiency as well as helping promote indigenous organic and permaculture practices throughout the area.
We are now on on way to becoming energy and water self-sustaining as well, and can be with your help!
Current Projects in Development and in Need of Support Include:
—$1,200 2017 Holiday to Remember funding for food and celebrations for the Season upon us. (This provides traditional celebratory food for the community as well, including protein, something the children rarely receive;)
—The Water Project: A bore hole (well) was drilled in July, 2017; the solar pump began operation in early December. Funding is yet needed for a metal storage tank and tower (for which we are awainting bids), a Security Fence ($1,600) and a gravity fed drip irrigation system for 8 of the Centre's 12 farmed acres. The professional survey and plan for the drip system is $100.
—$16,000 Furnishings for a newly built 100 bed (50 steel bunks) girls dormitory includes bedding and mosquito netting, personal & laundry wash buckets. This increases safety of the young girls, eliminating their risks of predation as they walk to and from the Centre for food and schooling ($160 will provide this for one girl);
—$240 monthly funding for three staff care takers for the dormitory;
—$35,000 Kitchen and Dinning Facility construction, i.e. two buildings. Cooking currently occurs over open fires and the dining facility is needed, to facilitate feeding the children once they are living on site.
—Tour and Emergency Vehicle: This will provide income generation and child safety, allowing the Centre to better host visiting learning groups who will contribute to the support of the Centre.
—Funds to bring internet to the Centre;
—Funds to bring Solar power to the dormitory (one for boys is planned).
