On May 11th of this year I will be running in the Maine Coast Half Marathon with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) team! As many of you know, suicide prevention and mental health awareness is very near and dear to me. The AFSP is the largest funder of suicide prevention research and specializes in educating people about mental illness and mental health support. I believe in and support the work and the research the people at the AFSP are doing daily. By raising funds for AFSP research, it is my little way of helping lessen the stigma of mental illnesses and raise awareness for suicide prevention. And May is Mental Health Awareness month too!
I am running in honor, and in memory, of my cousin James and my best friend Laura's mother, Carol. (Laura and I had run in the LA Marathon together on Valentines Day 3 years ago with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention relay team and it is a foundation we both support!) And I am running for all those who have lost a loved one to suicide, who struggle with mental illnesses, and to help erase the stigma!
