Words cannot express how excited I am to have been selected as a teammate of the 2018 Boston Marathon Team for Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Running the Boston Marathon has been a dream of mine for many years and running for Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island make this run all the more meaningful.
This touches my heart in so many ways because my nephew Cole had his wish granted several years ago. When Cole was 7, he was hit with a ball playing baseball at camp. My sister picked him up and brought him home. Later that evening, he woke up in pain and his stomach had become swollen. After a series of tests and scans, it was determined that Cole had cancer, stage IV Wilms tumor. He had a tumor on his kidney and several lesions on his liver. Doctors took immediate action and removed his kidney. He then began a long year of chemotherapy and radiation.
Cole remained strong and had a huge support system behind him. Even when he lost his hair, several men in the family, including my husband, shaved their heads. He was never alone, not for one minute. I then wanted to do something that would help raise my spirits during such a time, so I started running.
Cole's story is one that has ended happily. He's a bright, young 16 year old who plays sports and looks forward to applying to college next fall. Now is my opportunity to give back. I am honored to fundraise for Make-A-Wish Massachusetts and Rhode Island and to help make a child's wish come true.
Wish me luck as I train my heart out for an incredible organization.Thank you for supporting me along my 26.2 journey!
