Make this house healthy for a family with young children.
YACHAD and Mason Hillel are partnering for Sukkot in Spring, YACHAD’s annual home repair program. It is the nation’s largest home repair program sponsored by the Jewish community. Working together we can address substandard housing in the metro D.C. area and help our neighbors have safe and healthy homes.
Mason Hillel will be helping a family in Washington, D.C. The mother, a single mom from Cameroon, is raising two boys on her own. Her sons, 8 and 9 years old, both have autism and severe asthma. The mother reached out to YACHAD because she lacked heat or air conditioning. And, she received doctor’s orders to remove old carpet in order to make the house healthier for her sons.
YACHAD is tackling the family’s electrical and plumbing repairs, and most importantly, addressing asthma triggers in the house. Recent studies show that eliminating home-based triggers could reduce asthma flare-ups by 44 percent. Students from Mason Hillel, GW Hillel, and UMD Hillel will help remove the old carpet so the young boys can breathe easier. Carpet removal plus temperature regulation will make this house much healthier for the family.
Funding is needed to cover supplies, materials and outside professional contractors.
