Hi there! My name is Desiree' Wachter and I am Melina's Mommy! Our story began on October 28, 2003 when Melina was born. She was our second child, our second daughter. She was happy and healthy! Then, on February 7, 2004 at three months of age Melina was diagnosed with Infant Accute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She almost died the night that she was diagnosed. We spent 4 days in the PICU then up to the Oncology floor where she immediately started chemotherapy. Unfortunately, 2 of Melina's chromosomes traded places and therefore a normal chemotherapy regimen wouldn't be enough to save her life. She needed to have a bone marrow transplant. My husband, our 2 year old daughter and myself were all tested, but we were not a match. Melina was put out on the national and international bone marrow registry to find a match. One was found, a cord blood in Milan, Italy and on June 23, 2004 Melina had her bone marrow transplant. She was doing really well and there was talk of us being able to leave the hospital and go home. Then she started having some breathing complications that put her back into the PICU. Unfortunately, her little body had gone through so much to fight that damn cancer and on September 7, 2004 at 10 months old, Melina became an angel.
it took a few years, but I wanted to do something to keep Melina's memory alive so in 2010 my husband and I started our foundation. We only have one fundraiser a year, a golf tournament. This coming year will be our 12th annual! So many helped us when Melina was sick that I have an urging in my heart to help other families. So, with the money we raise I find kiddos here in Colorado who are fighting cancer and we help them and their families.
Please help us continue to help kiddos fighting for their lives by donating to our foundation!
