Hi friends and family!
I am thrilled to announce that on Monday April, 15th I will be representing the 2019 Massachusetts General Hospital Emergency Response Team in the Boston Marathon! The Mass General Emergency Response Marathon Team will raise funds to help provide critical support for emergency care, disaster relief and disaster preparedness teaching and training at Mass General that will benefit victims worldwide. These funds are crucial to ensure that Mass General is ready for the next disaster, man-made or natural, and to support the training and resources needed to develop a carefully, integrated response that spans multiple departments throughout the hospital. Time spent training is not covered by insurance and often takes place outside work hours. Money raised by the Mass General Emergency Response team allows Mass General to ready at a moment’s notice, responing to such events as Hurricane Maria and Irma.
In 2018 alone, there have been 11 natural disaster events across the mainland United States, resulting in loss of life and significant economic impacts. While hurricanes, floods, droughts and fires are a force of nature, they are exacerbated by the effects of Climate Change. Climate Change impacts are now, and will be in the future, existential for entire nations and will pose tremendous economic, health, safety and other risks to populations worldwide. At the non-profit I work for, Ceres, Inc., we advocate to prevent further climate change – but I strongly believe that we also need to prepare for the enhanced magnitude of disasters that are to come and Mass General’s Emergency Response team is working to do just that!
Most of you know that running the Boston Marathon has been a life goal for me – and after three grueling surgeries on my legs, followed by intensive rehab - I am beyond excited to say that I am at a point in my recovery process where my legs are ready to take on this goal, and I could not be more excited to fundraise for a cause that I full heartedly believe in, and one that we need now more than ever right now. I can't believe that I am getting the opportunity to cross this off of my bucket list, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to represent MGH in this endeavor. I hope you can support me (through a donation or friendly face along the course!) as I work to raise $10,000 for this amazing cause!
