Dear friends and family,
I am excited to share that I have once again joined the Mass General Marathon Team, Fighting Kids’ Cancer . . . One Step at a Time and plan to run the historic 123rd Boston Marathon on April 15th to raise money for pediatric cancer research and patient care programs at the Mass General Hospital for Children (MGHfC) Cancer Center.
As many of you know, my daughter Niamh’s dear friend Megan Sheehy lived an incredible life of hope before reaching the limits for the treatment of her osteosarcoma. Megan lived with cancer for more than a year and she continually inspired us with her grace, determination, and joy with her friends and family. MGHfC was instrumental in guiding the Sheehy family along this unfathomably challenging path and enhancing their opportunities to celebrate life and Love Strong. Through my experience with this team, I have been blessed to meet many of Megan’s caregivers and experience firsthand their warmth for Megan, Tim and Jean, and I continue to be invigorated and humbled by the stories of current MGHfC families receiving such elite and compassionate medical care.
Megan remarkable spirit continues to stir me to help more MGHfC families in her honor, and I need your help to reach and exceed my fundraising goal of $17,000. The funds raised by our team go directly to the MGHfC Cancer Center for clinical and laboratory research in childhood cancer, as well as supportive care programs like art and music therapy; parent, teen, and sibling support groups; and child life specialists who help patients cope with illness and treatment.
I hope I can count on you to support my run by contributing to this wonderful program. Any amount, great or small, will be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your support. To celebrate Megan’s life and spirit and to honor her memory, together we can make a difference in the lives of the kids at MGHfC and one day find a cure for childhood cancer.

Since 1998, with the partnership of John Hancock, the Mass General Marathon Team Fighting Kids’ Cancer, One Step at a Time has raised over $14 million to support the pediatric hematology-oncology program at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC). Funds raised are directed to cancer care, research, and initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the hospital’s youngest cancer patients.
Thanks in large part to the philanthropic dollars raised by this Marathon Team, MGHfC is advancing cutting-edge research, increasing the number of clinical studies to improve cure rates, and providing the best treatment possible to pediatric cancer patients. MGHfC is also focused on the quality of life of its young patients and their families through the child life program, which utilizes therapeutic play - music and art therapy to help pediatric cancer patients and their families cope emotionally and developmentally with their illnesses.
Each year more patients than ever before are referred to us because we continue to be leaders in transforming cancer care for children.
We are grateful for the hard work of all of our runners and the dedication of their family and friends, as they embark on fundraising and training for the historic 26.2 mile race.
