Hi everyone! I have been working as a Princeton in Latin America (PiLA) fellow in the Dominican Republic since August 2018. Through PiLA, I was paired with a non-profit called Yspaniola that provides holistic supplementary educational programming to students in the community of Batey Libertad. The batey is home to many Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent who face systemic discrimination that bars them from citizenship, travel, and higher-education (among many other life-affirming services). Since being here, I have witnessed the challenges that community members face when trying to access basic resources such as comprehensive healthcare or accurate birth certificates for their children. Batey Libertad is an incredible community full of people who I love deeply, and I am committed to supporting the work our team does to ensure that students feel represented and empowered inside and out of the classroom. In July, I will be hiking the highest mountain in the Caribbean, Pico Duarte, to raise funds for our literacy programming. This is a cause that is very important to me—even a small donation has a large impact and allows us to purchase new books, take on more university scholars, or expand classroom materials. Please consider supporting me as I take on this new adventure and raise funds for Yspaniola!
