I am excited to join Team Framingham in running the 2018 Boston Marathon!
I am running to support Resiliency for Life. RFL is a program dedicated to supporting the academic, social and emotional needs of students classified as “high risk” in Framingham, MA. I have been granted a tremendous opportunity through my personal support team to be physically prepared to meet this challenge so I was immediately drawn to RFL when selecting a charity.
Through a with Framingham Public Schools, Resiliency for Life (RFL) serves a high-needs population within the town of Framingham. RFL is a voluntary academic intervention and dropout prevention program that develops skills and confidence in students with social difficulties who are at-risk of academic failure. RFL provides:
· Academic interventions, such as after-school homework programs, MCAS test prep and tutoring;
· Supportive community that holds students to high standards;
· Coordinated effort with the existing resources within the school system to ensure that students’ academic, social and emotional needs are met;
· Frequent progress reports to parents and workshops to address current issues such as communicating with teens, substance abuse, sexual health, post-high school planning, financial literacy, etc.
The Resiliency Program is in part funded by the school district, but needs to raise over $200,000 per year to continue servicing students. Funds provide opportunities for transition planning activities to explore options for after high school, supplies, co-pays for therapeutic interventions, after school tutoring, bi-monthly parent meetings, SAT prep, after school enrichment classes and portions of staff salaries.
Students in RFL have been featured on the A+ segment on Channel 5 in Boston https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZoji6x4Iic and one of RFL’s graduates was a designer on the Lifetime Channel’s Project Runway http://www.mylifetime.com/shows/project-runway/cast/nathalia-jmag.
With the support of RSF, students make successful transitions to life after high school by participating in post-secondary education, entering the work force and military. RFL has a history of keeping students designated as “high risk” engaged in their academic, social and emotional health with only one student dropout over the past 5 years.
Thank you in advance for your support!!
