At Mohonk Preserve, environmental stewardship is part of our DNA. Our mission is to protect the Shawangunk Mountains and inspire people to care for, enjoy, and explore their natural world. As part of the Preserve’s commitment to both people and nature, the organization conducts programs in four key areas:
Environmental Education – The Preserve serves over 13,000 children and adults each year through award-winning, innovative outdoor education programs.
Land Protection – The Preserve protects key recreational areas, fragile habitats, and scenic viewsheds through strategic acquisitions and conservation easements.
Land Stewardship – The Preserve manages over 8,000 acres of protected property and helps provide a safe, participatory experience in nature for over 200,000 visitors each year.
Conservation Science – The Preserve uses the latest scientific techniques and a century of natural history data to monitor and manage the diverse ecosystems on the Shawangunk Ridge, and to share with scientific and academic institutions worldwide.
Since 1963, Mohonk Preserve has created a land ethic that puts people in the center of nature. The Preserve encourages visitors to explore the natural world, protect the Shawangunks, and carry those connections back to their own communities.
