GIVE KIDS SOME NATURE
– GIVE NATURE SOME KIDS. FOREVER!
Did you know that the average American child spends over six hours a day in front of a screen -- yet only four to seven minutes playing outside?! Thankfully, in our area, Monmouth Conservation Foundation’s Kids for Conservation program is helping to change that.
Until recently, six-year-old Abigail and her younger brothers Miles and Zach had little interest in playing outside. They were way too busy focused on playing Minecraft and game-apps on their iPhones.
Thanks to Kids for Conservation, they’re now spending lots more time playing outside -- searching for four-leaf clovers, chasing butterflies, spotting blue jays and getting up-close-and-personal with earthworms. And they’re spending less time staring bleary-eyed at their electronic devices.
The surprising news? Abigail and her brothers are better focused at school as a result. It’s true -- studies are proving that the more time children spend in outdoor activity, the more focused they can be when it’s time to return to the classroom.
We’re really proud of the fact that, thanks to Kids for Conservation, hundreds of children in Monmouth County are learning about -- and getting inspired by -- the natural world.
Geared especially to their young minds, this remarkable educational initiative teaches kids about protecting wildlife, saving farms, respecting local lands, recycling, and understanding how their actions, even at a young age, impact their environment and ours!
BY GIVING NOW, YOU’LL . . . . . .
Bring Nature Straight to Kids! Importantly, Kids for Conservation brings nature into the lives of children in urban, suburban, and underserved communities -- the areas with the least access to green space. . . .
Get Kids Moving! Children today aren’t just nature-starved. As a generation, they suffer from staggering obesity rates. Kids for Conservation emphasizes active play and exploring outside, and provides them with far more beneficial physical activity and movement than indoor pursuits do. . . .
Grow Future Conservationists! By exposing children to nature, you’re planting the seeds of curiosity and a sense of wonder in children’s lives today – encouraging an understanding and caring for the natural world for their entire lives.
Speaking of a sense of wonder, the great Rachel Carson -- perhaps the finest writer on nature and conservation that America has ever known -- wrote, “If I had influence with the good fairy . . . I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life.”
