Northland Family Help Center has been serving the Flagstaff, AZ community for 40 years! Over that time, we continue to evolve and fill gaps in social services to ensure our communities’ individuals, families, and youth are healthy and thriving. NFHC has both a gender inclusive Emergency Domestic Violence Shelter and an unaccompanied Youth Shelter. We also provide community based services including Trauma Therapy, Legal Advocacy, Community Education, and Outreach for homeless youth. In 2017, we created and housed The Flagstaff Initiative Against Trafficking (FIAT). FIAT began by conducting a community needs assessment. Approximately a dozen agencies including, hospitals, shelters and criminal justice agencies started asking intake questions about trafficking so we could gauge the extent of problem in our community. We have been shocked as hundreds have shared that they are victims of sex and labor trafficking. Once we knew the extent of the issue every regional Law Enforcement agency began working together on both recovery and perpetrator sting operations. While considering logistics of recovery operations we realized that there were no specific residential services for victims of human trafficking in our area and that the closest shelter was 129 miles away. NFHC staff quickly identified this as a population we were capable to serve as it aligned with our services for abused children and victims of Domestic Violence. In 2018, we set aside space in each shelter program for victims of human trafficking, with no new funding. We also trained our staff and developed a Human Trafficking Program Coordinator position to better assist victims in reclaiming controls of their lives. We weren’t sure how many folks would need shelter; we knew there was a trafficking problem in our area but we did not anticipate that 10% of our Youth Shelter population would report being victims of sex-trafficking. We expect these numbers will rise until we have more sting operations and community education to drive down the demand for human trafficking in our area. Human Trafficking is one of the most horrific crime types and it is taking our youth! We saw a problem in our community, we gathered the stakeholders needed to evoke positive change, we conducted a needs assessment and now we provide services to victims. By donating $100 to this campaign you can provide a child victim of trafficking with a safe place to stay, by donating $75 you can provide a child with a trauma therapy session, and by donating $30 you can feed 15 youth staying in the shelter a meal. It takes a village to raise child and it takes the world to end crimes against children. Thank you for your support!
