Northlea's WE committee students have been looking at the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). We are learning about access to clean water in developing countries as well as poor water conditions in our own country in many First Nation communities/reserves. WE have learned that:
844 million people around the world lack access to basic drinking water.
2.3 billion people lack basic sanitation.
Two thirds of the world population live in areas with water scarcity for part of each year.
Women and girls bear the primary responsibility of fetching water in 8 out of 10 households with water off premises. This takes girls out of school and perpetuates poverty and inaccessibility to meet basic needs.
The Northlea WE committee is initiating a Walk for Water to raise awareness and funds to provide people in WE Villages around the globe with clean water for life.
For every $25 raised, we can provide 1 person with safe, clean water for life.
