What do you get when domestic violence shelters and programs, victim advocates and survivors, and other concerned Ohioans join together to advance real solutions to domestic violence? The Ohio Domestic Violence Network (ODVN), Ohio’s statewide domestic violence coalition. ODVN listens to the needs of survivors and the programs and systems that are responding daily to domestic violence in our communities. We work together to craft compassionate community responses that positively impact the lives of survivors and their children. Then we deliver on these responses by developing much needed resources, providing trainings, leading prevention initiatives, and advocating for public policy and legislation.
ODVN is your statewide domestic violence coalition. We exist to provide resources to survivors such as civil legal assistance, advocating for improved legislation and polices that support survivors, relocation assistance, and providing support and training to our domestic violence service providers.
Relocation Assistance Program
Can you imagine having to make the decision to leave your home and your community in fear for your own safety and that of your children? That is the decision many survivors faced in the past year in Ohio. ODVN was pleased to be able to offer relocation assistance for the second year in a row, helping survivors and children in life threatening situations secure moving expenses, first month rent and utility deposits so that they could safely move to a new location quickly.
Relocation assistance changes lives. The following is a quote from a domestic violence advocate:
“The survivor I am working with is SO incredibly thankful for the ODVN relocation assistance program. Since relocating, she has been able to successfully live without fear, stalking and threats from the perpetrator…This resource gave her the safety and security that was essential to her empowerment and independence during this difficult time.”
Last year, with support from people like you, ODVN positively changed the lives of over 600 survivors and their children through our relocation assistance program in 47 Ohio counties.
Legal Assistance Program
“I am free!” These are the feelings of a young boy in a therapy session after his mother was helped with legal services through the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. His feelings are echoed by his mom, who describes what it is like to be living without violence. “Sometimes I find myself rushing at the grocery, so I can get home in time to not make him mad. Then I remember, he’s not there anymore. He’s in jail, I have a protection order. We are getting divorced. I can take my time. I can buy the food I want. I am free of all of the violence I lived under for years, living with his rules. All his rules were written in pencil, subject to change at any moment. He was in control of my life. But now me and my kids – we are all free of it.”
ODVN has a legal assistance program for survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence and stalking, funded through federal and private sources. Each year, ODVN provides free legal services through a network of over 50 contract attorneys working on a reduced fee basis. The program helps between 100-125 families who are ineligible for legal aid but who don’t have enough income to pay for legal counsel. Survivors who have been through unimaginable violence – beatings, sexual assaults, strangulations, threats to be killed, having their pets killed, and more – receive an attorney who can help them with many legal needs such as seeking protection orders, divorce, and custody of their children. Legal services help survivors get free from violent partners and start to rebuild their lives. ODVN believes no survivor should face their abuser in court alone. Every year we work hard to fill the gaps in available legal services in Ohio to be sure victims are not alone.
ODVN creates a more just, caring and healthy community for all through primary prevention of domestic violence. One of our current initiatives includes the Ohio Men’s Action Network (OHMAN), which works to engage men in anti-violence, campus safety, and statewide primary prevention planning.
ODVN makes an impact on our community through engaging advocates in training, technical assistance and networking to improve skills and enhance knowledge in order to provide quality services to survivors of domestic violence. In addition, ODVN impacts public policy helping to ensure through state and federal legislation and policies that survivors of domestic violence have access to resources, services, and policies that increase safety and that holds domestic violence offenders accountable.
We are the only federally recognized statewide coalition in Ohio for domestic violence. Each state has one. We have expert staff with years of experience working in the field of domestic violence.
A $25 donation allows ODVN to print and distribute 1,000 educational brochures and safety plans to victims of domestic violence.
A $50 donation allows ODVN to continue to work on public policy issues and legislation that ensures safety for victims of domestic violence.
A $100 donation allows ODVN to provide a victim with 1 hour of legal consultation with an attorney to obtain a civil protection order.
A $500 donation allows ODVN to provide one day of training to domestic violence advocates at a local shelter on how to best serve the survivors in their community.
Your gift of $25, $50, $100, $500, or whatever you can afford will make an immediate impact. All of us at ODVN, including our dedicated staff, board and volunteers thank you for your generous partnership and support.
