Story

About a mile from Orient Point, at the tip of Long Island’s North Fork, lies the 840 acre pork-chop shaped Plum Island. On this island is Plum Gut Lighthouse, the most significant seal haul-out site in southern New England. Behind this is a giant marsh, home to federally threatened piping plovers, along with approximately 190 other bird species that utilize the island for breeding or migratory purposes. This pristine island is at risk of development. That's a terrible idea.

STOP THE PROPOSED SALE OF THE ISLAND

Despite the obvious natural, cultural, scenic and recreational values of Plum Island, the federal government is currently trying to sell it to the highest bidder. With this intended sale, the General Services Administration is failing to comply with provisions in the Endangered Species Act, the Coastal Zone Management Act, and other laws and programs designed to protect the environment.

SELLING THE ISLAND WOULD DESTROY IT. BUT YOU CAN STOP IT.

The sale would be bad news for historical preservation and even worse news for the many endangered species who rely on the island for to survive. Your help is needed today more than ever. You fundraising will provide the resources needed to save Plum Island forever.

From Plum Lighthouse to Piping Plovers, Plum Island deserves our protection. Help us save the beauty of Plum Island for future generations!
