Join me and Paco as we walk around Jamaica Pond! The more dogs the merrier and if you don't have a dog, you can borrow Paco for a while. We're raising money and awareness for this very good cause for Friendship Works. The event is, "The Walk to End Elder Isolation" and it takes place on May 20th, starting and ending at Rogerson House in Jamaica Plain. It's easy to get to from the orange line or bus 39.
I was fortunate to have grown up in the same town and somtimes the same house as my grandparents but I know not every grandchild and grandparent is that lucky. Friendship Works helps connect elders who are alone in their homes or in various stages of assisted living and care with people who volunteer to go visit them. Paco and I volunteer with one of their programs called Pet Pals by visiting people every week in an assisted living center. It's amazing how the simple act of Paco and I walking through their doors can be the high point of their day or week. It has been a constant highlight of my week for the past two years now and I feel it's my turn to give back to this wonderful organization.
Many of the people we visit have had pets their entire lives and weren't able to bring them with them when they moved into an assisted living center. When they pet and visit with me and Paco, they tell me stories of their pets and that always brings smiles to their faces.
Some people don't speak English well or at all, but Paco listens to everything they have to say and just soaks up the attention.
