Initial estimates of deaths by drug overdose in 2016 are set to exceed 60,000. Now labeled the modern plague, opioid addiction is at the center of this epidemic, and 2016 was a record year across the board for lives lost. One of these fatalities in particular shook my family and I to our core.
My cousin Derek Hanley lost his battle with addiction at 31, just 11 days after he became a father to his beautiful daughter Jenna. Derek was someone everyone looked up to as a friend, mentor, athlete, and family member. He taught me how to tie my shoes, appreciate a good sense of humor, and fearlessly fight the challenges I face in life.
In 2015, members of my immediate and extended family established IntoAction Recovery, LLC, a non-profit dedicated to providing a long term educational, therapeutic and spiritual 12 – Step program for men with opiate and/or alcohol addiction. Before losing Derek last year, I lost my father to alcoholism in 2011.
In on honor of them and the countless lives lost every year, I'm running my 2nd annual Boston Marathon to help propel this message and mission forward.
I'm so proud to stand behind IntoAction Recovery as we continue to push for sustainable and accessible recovery options. Join me in breaking the silence and stigma around this disease. While my minimum requirement is $5000, I plan to far exceed that.
We're going to have a lot of fun this year. Join me as we celebrate the lives and legacies of those we lost, help those fighting get treatment, and raise money for an amazing charity. Stay tuned for events and updates! Any donation means the truly means the world to my family and I.
