Camp Felix changed my life and it changes the lives of foster kids every year. It's a magical place where kids can learn, grow, explore and be a part of the best family, The Felix Family. Our kids, wise beyond their years, having survived trauma, abuse and neglect, have an opportunity to be free from those challenges for a few weeks each year. In comparison to the year, it is a short time. But when considering the quality of time and all that our kids get out of it, it is immensely worthwhile and makes a humongous difference in their lives.
My sister, Pam and I started as Camp Counselors back in 2007. We immediately fell in love with the camp, the kids and the staff. We decided that we wanted to teach the kids to swim. Inner city foster youth rarely get a chance to learn how to swim. For many of them the camp pool was the only body of water they were in all year. To know how to swim is a lifesaving skill we believe everyone should have and we wanted to give our kids the opportunity to have that. We returned the following year as Lifeguards and began to build a learn to swim program for our children. We came back each year making our Aquatics program stronger, more effective and extremely fun! The program grew to host water polo tournaments and swim competitions. And although I have moved on from my Aquatics Director days, the program continues to teaches hundreds of foster kids to swim each year.
To serve as the Aquatics Director of Camp Felix has been of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I am so grateful to have had the experience to grow alongside our swimmers.
