I'm doing this run to raise money for Work - - - an organization whose mission is to accompany families in Haiti out of poverty through good, dignified jobs.
You can research more about the organization here:
They work with 3,000 family members to place into dignified work, and they don't move on from a family until EVERYONE in the family is set up for success.
They started Run Across Haiti 5 years ago to show that Haiti is not a place to be feared or to be pitied and to raise funds for their work in ending poverty in Menelas through dignified jobs.
I am excited to support this organization, but personally decided to join because I am a 6th grade teacher at a school with a large Haitian and Dominican population. A lot of them wrote some incredible poems about Haiti as their heart and soul. This seemed like a great opportunity to travel somewhere meaningful and beautiful.
As half-Dominican, I have visited my Mother's home country and am still working on learning Spanish, but have never been to Haiti. I am using this race as an opportunity to explore the DR's neighbor. In the process, I hope to challenge (even if it's only in a small way!) some common anti-Haitian stereotypes Dominicans often hold. Donate and leave comments if you have any ideas of how I can best involve my Haitian and Dominican students in this project!
