I'm doing this run to raise money for Work - - - an organization whose mission is to accompany families in Haiti out of poverty through good, dignified jobs.
You can research more about the organization here:
They work with 3,000 family members to place into dignified work, and they don't move on from a family until EVERYONE in the family is set up for success.
They started Run Across Haiti 5 years ago to show that Haiti is not a place to be feared or to be pitied and to raise funds for their work in ending poverty in Menelas through dignified jobs.
I am excited to support this organization, but personally decided to join because I am a 6th grade teacher at a school with a large Haitian and Dominican population. They were excited when I mentioned I was thinking about doing this race and wrote some pretty bomb poems about Haiti as their heart and soul. I signed right up!
I also happen to be half-Dominican, but don't speak Spanish and get a lot of gringa jokes when I see my Dominican family (yay family!) I am using this race as a way to connect with my students, challenge my self physically, and get a first hand look at the work being done by Haitians in Haiti (the neighboring country to the DR). Donate and leave comments if you have any ideas of how I can best involve my Haitian and Dominican students in this project!
