Pastoralist Child Foundation (PCF) was founded in 2012 by a teacher in New Jersey, USA and a Samburu, Kenya warrior fighting for girls' rights to education.
Our mission is to educate communities at the grassroots level about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and child marriage. The rate of FGM where we work is 85%. These 2 practices are human rights violations, gender-based violence against girls and women, marginalizes females and prevents them from reaching their maximum potentials. We believe that everyone has the right to be educated about life saving skills in order to fully participate as contributing citizens of the world.
Since 2012, PCF has saved 1,100 girls from undergoing the barbaric and inhumane practice of FGM. (For in depth information about FGM, please visit this link. Our workshops teach girls, boys, women, and men about FGM, child marriage, teen pregnancy, sexual & reproductive health rights, HIV/AIDS, child rights, sanitation, and the importance of formal education. Our efforts have been instrumental in lowering the FGM rate in East Samburu County, Kenya from 98% to 85%. Child marriage has also declined and to our sheer delight the enrollment of girls in primary and secondary schools is increasing. Now, we don't just teach girls. It takes a community effort and community buy-in to prevent and eradicate deeply rooted harmful practices. Therefore, our workshops are open to boys, men, elders, religious leaders, teachers, law enforcement, healthcare workers, former circumcisers, and village chiefs. As a UNICEF partner, we're dedicated and honored to protect children from all harm.
Money raised from our participation in the Newman's Own Foundation $500,000 Holiday Challenge will fund additional FGM and reproductive health workshops throughout Samburu County, Kenya. We believe in a hand up, not a hand out. The communities we work with believe in the power of education and self sufficiency. Pastoralist Child Foundation is showing the way.
