The Watch Your Life Movement (WYLM) is a Research, Education and Advocacy organization that promotes study and action on issues linking disability and social justice. Since its inception, WYLM has fostered a disability inspired perspective to critically understand current
issues which emphasize dignity at individual and household levels. We are promoting the rights and well-being of Persons with Disabilities
(PWDs) in all spheres of development and increase awareness on the situation of PWDs in every aspect of society.
IN Zambia, the percentage of the population living with disabilities is one of the highest in Africa. At least 650,000 Zambians live with disabilities, and the exact count may be even higher. Despite the fact that some Zambians have at least one disability, the country does not
have adequate legal provisions to protect the human rights of people with disabilities. There are no comprehensive laws that address disability issues.
The few existing laws provide only implicit protections and some implicitly discriminate against people with disabilities. The inadequacy of Zambia disability rights scheme is reflected in Zambia failure to comply with the new Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, a treaty that Zambia has already signed and ratified. To provide a minimal level of protection for people with disabilities, Zambia first critical move should be to implement the proposed disability draft law that the legislature had considered since 2012. Zambia should use the convention guidance to revise this law to provide a more comprehensive protective scheme for its most vulnerable citizens.
Our program notes the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) and 7th National Development Plan pledges to “LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND”. Therefore, Government, PWDs and the Private Sector need to work as a team to achieve these development goals.
